In 1978 the Federal Government restricted the use of lead based paint due to numerous health threats posed by this product.  Lead does not exist in every home built before 1978, but the older the house the higher the probability is for the presence of lead based paint. 
The long-term concern with lead are the health issues attributed to the exposure.  The financial concerns are the cost associated with properly removing and terminating of the materials.  Both concerns are real and are the basis for further pursuit in gaining the facts when testing your home for the potential of lead based paint.
